GUIDELINES TO SETTING AN OSLO HASH RUN

1.    PLAN and recce the run in advance. Walking the trail should not take more than 2 hours and doing so will avoid suprises when setting the trail. Any maps, especially orienteering maps are helpful.

2.    TRAILS -there should be one main trail and possibilities to short cut such that slower runners and walkers have an option to take a shorter route.

3.    AVOID areas like cultivated areas, cemeteries, main roads, private land etc.

4.    SUMMER runs are preferred in the surrounding terrain and forests

5.    WINTER runs should preferably provide an indoor location for after the run.

6.    DISTANCE and duration. A one hour run is ideal, this could be 5-7 km depending on the terrain and complexity of the trail. If you are including a beer stop, remember this will take 10 minutes and try and get everybody back before dark.

7.    HOW TO MARK THE TRAIL

  • Reckon to use 2 - 4 hours to set a trail that will take the hounds 1 hour to run round. This includes the time needed to mark false trails etc.
  • Marking the trail can be done with dots of sawdust (obtainable from timberyards "trelast” /supermarkets/pet shops) or flour. Three 1kg bags of sawdust or two big (2,5 kg) bags of flour should be enough to set a trail. The dots should be laid at 25 to 50 m intervals, depending on the terrain.
  • Checks help to keep the pack together and are marked with a circle. The distance between checks is typically 500 m but this can be shorter or longer, depending on what possibilities are available. Try to avoid  stretches longer than approx 1000 m without checks as these tend to separate the pack too much. A properly laid trail should have everyone arriving at the finish nearly together.
  • Checks should be placed at points where there are several choices of paths to continue. The more choices there are, the better.
  • The dots leading out of the check should not be visible from the check, but the first dot should be placed not more than 100 m from the check.
  • False trails from the check are a good way to lead the front-runners astray. They can be "closed", i.e. one or two dots followed by an X, or left "open", i.e. one or two dots and then nothing. Put the first dot of false trails nearer to the checks than the first dot of the correct trail, so that the false trail(s) will be discovered first.
  • The third dot on a trail out of the check tells runners that they've found the correct trail, i.e. that they're "ON".
  • "Back checks" can be used anywhere along the trail to slow down the front-runners. A back check is indicated by an X possibly together with a number. E.g. X5 tells the runners to turn round and go back 5 dots, where they will find the dots that show where the trail continues.
  • Regroups (RG), can be introduced if you think the pack needs to come together again, e.g. after a long, hard climb.
  • Use extra arrows if necessary to show the correct direction.

8.    ORIGINALITY is always appreciated, make your run unique and one to be remembered.

9.    ANY BEER STOPS (BS) should be towards the end of the run. Utilise any nice location, view point, maybe another Hasher’s house/garage in the winter.

10.BEER: as Hare, it is your responsibility to purchase enough beer and other drinks for the run. You should buy at least pilsner beer and non-alcoholic beer (Munkys) for the drivers. The number attending the run can vary considerably but the average number of Pils/Munky drinkers is 15/10 in winter and 14/16 in summer. You should plan to supply at least 4 pils for each of the drinkers and 3 munkys for each of the non-drinkers. It’s better to have too much than too little, and you can always sell the excess to the next hare. You shall collect money for beers consumed over the quota, there is a container for this purpose. Use the claim form overleaf for reimbursement.

11.FOOD: as Hare, it is your responsibility to provide some food. This does not have to be anything elaborate and a simple soup and bread is adequate. You should try not to exceed kr 20 per person in food expenses. Claims in excess of this must be supported by receipts. If you plan to exceed kr 25 per person, please check it out with the committee beforehand. Good food is always appreciated and for special occasions or runs involving an overnight, we can rather increase the run fee.

12.HHH signs, down-down mugs, Hashit, large cool boxes are available if you need them. Some items are in the mug bag, for others, contact the committee.
